History
Many people think of going to Latin America or Africa when they think of mission trips. But in 2013, at the University of Texas, the Schoenstatt University Men of Austin embraced a different vision—to bring the mission of love closer to home. Inspired by Pope Francis’ call to be the missionary generation, this group sought to make a meaningful impact in their own city.
The Ignis mission responds to the needs of the Austin community with love: distributing food to the hungry, building homes for the homeless, comforting the lonely, and fostering faith-filled connections with Catholic brothers and sisters. Each year College students serves in Austin area during the end of fall semester, contributing to this mission.
The Mission
Being a missionary is a true act of faith and trust in Him. It means signing up with all your strength, waiting for that genuine joy you feel when you succeed!
Being a missionary begins precisely here: trust in Him and in His will and, above all, the ability to throw ourselves headfirst into the unknown, even without knowing anyone!
On the first day of the mission, leaders will provide information on sleeping arrangements, the service schedule, and an overview of the week. You’ll spend the day getting to know one another. At our “home” base, there will be various activities such as games, quizzes, testimonies, and question nights to foster community and reflection.
The outcome of this week is built through our collective efforts—the transformation of the missionary spirit, the joy of going door-to-door to serve those who need a little more love. We encourage openness and the willingness to connect with each person at the service site, not only to lend a helping hand but to open your hearts and share stories.
Throughout the mission, we are blessed with opportunities to connect with our parish family—our home base. Community activities, like our Christmas party and high school worship, play a vital role in deepening relationships and sharing the love of God with those around us. These moments are sacred, where we come together to celebrate our faith and showcase the profound impact of our mission. They remind us of how our love for God is expansive, reaching beyond the confines of service sites to embrace the broader parish community.
In the midst of the constant noise, the rush from one place to another , and the ongoing conversations, coming back home their are moments of silence and prayer which are essential. These moments provide a space to reflect, process, and embrace the experiences of the week. How beautiful it is to pause and encounter Him who is always near, offering transformation during this Mission week.
Upon returning, you feel deeply moved by the experience—a week filled with joy and connection, a “full heart.” You realize that this isn’t just an incredible week, but a way of life—growing closer to God alongside good friends and the amazing people you’ve met. Beyond an incredible week, there is an even more incredible year ahead, filled with lasting memories and deeper connections.
But is the mission is just another week of volunteering?
No! The Mission is different from volunteering because there is an encounter with Jesus in everyday actions!!
